Can A Graduate Apply For An Undergraduate Degree
Some students leave their undergraduate degree ready to tackle the world of work, while others choose to continue their education with a postgraduate degree. There is no right or wrong choice, but we recommend that you consider your options wisely to give yourself the best chance.
What Is The Difference Between College And University?
In this article, we hear from undergraduates Gabriella Baker and Nia Griffiths about their paths to postgraduate studies. We will also look at some of the common reasons for continuing studies at postgraduate level and the specific specialties where further study is required.
There are many reasons why students may choose to study at postgraduate level. To shed some light on this topic, we spoke to UCL Psychological Sciences student Gabriela Baker. He said: “I chose my postgraduate studies with the very specific aim of being able to enter a PhD in clinical psychology, as I want to be a psychologist in the future.”
Gabriela explains that her undergraduate studies are important and have prepared her for a master’s degree. He explains, “We incorporate a lot of things I already learned in my undergraduate studies. I think I would have struggled if I hadn’t studied brain behavior and cognition in my physics course. “
Speaking about why he chose his professions, he said: “Because I also found therapy, I fell in love with this field and I want to help other young people who face the same situation.”

Some students know they want to do graduate school early, even before they begin undergraduate studies. However, others decide during their undergraduate studies when they have a clear idea of what they like, or after taking some time out of higher education.
According to Gabriela, “There is a real diversity in terms of what people have studied under their degree, some do neuroscience, but there are also quite a few English and engineering degrees.” He added: “I finished university in 2016 and I was trying to save money to be able to live in London so I was waiting. Then I got a job working for the NHS because I wanted to work in the public sector. It was only then that I decided I wanted to apply for a postgraduate course.”
Gabriela told us she was worried about the break she took between undergraduate and postgraduate studies, saying: “I was worried about being older than everyone else on my course as I waited a few years before starting my Masters, but there is a real mix. “Some have just left their studies, but someone has already obtained a doctorate and there are still a few mature students on this course.”
While some students pursue a master’s degree to focus on a specific area of interest, other students work in jobs that require additional education.
Student Exchange Program: The University Of Tokyo, Japan
For example, to become a solicitor, you need to complete a three-year degree and then take a one-year conversion course to a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). You might be distracted by the thought of another year of study, but the good news is that you can study any subject and apply for a one-year law reform course to become a lawyer. You do not necessarily have to study an undergraduate LLB course to be eligible.
Similarly, to become an occupational therapist, you will need to obtain a postgraduate degree. This type of work comes with a lot of responsibility and requires specific skills that cannot be taught at undergraduate level alone. You will first need to study a degree related to this field such as biology, psychology or other scientific subjects.
So what does this mean? Basically, if you have a job in mind, research the route you need to take to get to your destination or talk to someone at the university. This way, you can go straight to a Masters course with the qualifications you already have without having to convert them.
If you choose courses that are not directly related to the Master’s degree you want to study, you can search for conversion courses and speak to the university’s admissions staff to see if you can convert your degree. It’s never too late to try something new.
Eligibility And Apply To Graduate
You can also speak to admissions staff before applying for postgraduate courses and ask if it is easy to convert the course you want to study into a postgraduate course, as they will be able to point you in the right direction.
With many students choosing their undergraduate course at the age of 18, it’s no surprise that many don’t really know what they want to do after university. However, after you finish your degree or later in life, your interests may change and you may want to pursue a different field.
If your undergraduate studies are completely different to the master’s degree you want to study, first try to talk to the university where you want to study a master’s degree and ask what they need from you before you apply.
You can try to express yourself in this area of learning. Another way to explore volunteering or gaining work experience in a relevant industry is to get evidence of your interest in the field.
Graduation & Convocation For Graduate Students
We also spoke to Nia Griffiths, who graduated in Social and Political Science at Goldsmiths University, who shared her experience of transitioning from undergraduate to postgraduate studies. Nia said: “I always had an idea of what I wanted to get into and play therapy was something I really enjoyed when I did my first degree.”
“I was worried that my studies would not translate into the professionals I wanted to enter, but I was able to access a course on psychoanalytic methods of working with families, children and young people. This course is a prerequisite for a doctorate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy for children and young people,” he added.
Hopefully you now have a clear idea of what it means to study a postgraduate course and what courses you might need to take to study at Masters level.
