What Are The Names Of Steroid Medications
Dexamethasone is a low-cost, anti-inflammatory drug that has been shown to reduce the risk of death in patients with COVID-19.

Editor’s note: Since we published this story, Trump’s doctor says the president has completed treatment for COVID-19.
President Trump told Fox Business Network on Thursday that he will take a steroid for COVID-19 “a little longer.” His doctors told reporters last weekend that Trump began taking the drug on Saturday while he was at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The steroid, dexamethasone, is now part of the “standard of care” for COVID-19, said Dr. Celine Gounder, assistant professor of medicine and infectious diseases at New York University School of Medicine.
“It’s an old drug, it’s cheap,” she said. “Of all the drugs we’re using for Covid, we have a lot of experience.”

Dexamethasone is an anti-inflammatory drug used for a wide range of ailments, including arthritis, kidney, blood and thyroid disorders, and severe allergies. This drug is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines and is also used to treat certain types of cancer.
Earlier this year, a large clinical trial in the U.K. found that giving dexamethasone to hospitalized patients with COVID-19 reduced their risk of death. Patients were given 6 milligrams of the drug for 10 days.
In July, deaths among critically ill COVID-19 patients on ventilators were reduced by a third and among patients receiving supplemental oxygen by a fifth. It has been found to have no benefits for patients with mild illness, and there is some evidence of potential harm.
Later in the course of the disease, the Covid-19 immune system goes into overdrive, damaging the lungs and other organs. This happens to people who are seriously ill. Dexamethasone helps these patients by reducing the body’s immune response.
Steroids And Diabetes: The Effect On High Blood Sugar
The Infectious Diseases Society of America now recommends giving 6 milligrams of the drug for 10 days to critically ill Covid-19 patients on ventilators and those requiring oxygen support. But it recommends not using the drug on mildly ill people who don’t need supplemental oxygen.
Although this commonly used drug is generally safe, there are known side effects. “By far, the most common is hyperglycemia, so your blood sugars go up,” Gounder says.
“Anything from feeling like you’re on top of the world … your joint aches and pains melt away as you age, you have so much energy,” she said. “There might be some greatness.”
The drug can also cause anxiety, insomnia and psychosis, Gounder said. “My own father was treated with high-dose steroids as part of his lymphoma regimen and developed severe psychosis that required hospitalization.”
Trump Was Treated With Steroids: How These Drugs Are Used For Covid 19 Patients
Trump would have completed steroid therapy early next week if the president’s doctors had prescribed the recommended treatment for him. On Thursday evening, White House physician Dr. Sean Conley said Trump had completed his treatment for COVID-19. Oral corticosteroids (OCS), often called oral steroids, are a medication used to treat severe or uncontrolled asthma. Oral corticosteroids, also called oral steroids, are available in pill or liquid form. Oral steroids are not the same as anabolic steroids or inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) used in bodybuilding, which carry fewer risks.
Usually your doctor will prescribe a course (or burst) of OCS over a few days. Very few patients need to take daily OCS long-term to control asthma symptoms.
If you need two or more courses of oral steroids in a 12-month period, you should talk to your doctor about other treatment options for your asthma. Use of two or more oral steroids in a 12-month period is indicative of poor asthma control.
While oral steroids are often prescribed for severe asthma and have benefits, overuse of OCS can be harmful to long-term health.
Prednisone: Basics, Side Effects & Reviews
OCS use can have a cumulative effect on a person over their lifetime, and overdependence can cause significant side effects. Besides:
People using OCS should be aware and cautious of side effects and always discuss any side effects with their doctor after starting treatment. People with asthma should also:
OCS Overexposed is a national education campaign developed in collaboration with more than 10 patient advocacy and medical societies to raise awareness about appropriate OCS use and frequent exposure to OCS overuse – a treatment plan that no longer works. The campaign also developed an Oral Corticosteroid Stewardship Statement.
There are several asthma assessment tools you can use to determine if your asthma is under control:

National asthma guidelines recommend using a daily symptom diary. This could be the Allergy & Asthma Network’s AsthmaTracker™. It helps you track symptoms, peak expiratory flow rates, and medications used.
AsthmaTracker™ helps you track how well your symptoms are responding to your treatment plan. You write down your symptoms, peak expiratory flow rate, and medication use every day. This will help you notice a pattern to your symptoms. With this you can develop strategies to stop symptoms before they stop you.
A peak flow meter is a handheld device that measures peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). How much air you can force out of your lungs at a given time.
The free Asthma Storylines app is a self-care tool for asthma management. Track symptoms, learn more about daily patterns, and record things to discuss with your healthcare team.
How—and Why—to Choose Dry Eye Drugs
Dr. Sean Conley said the president was given dexamethasone, a steroid, after “two episodes of transient drops in his oxygen saturation,” meaning his oxygen levels dropped too low.
“We discussed the reasons for this and we will intervene as well,” Conley said at a news conference at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. It was “the team’s decision based primarily on the timeline from the initial diagnosis that we would start dexamethasone.”
Trump received his first dose of the steroid on Saturday and will remain on it “for now,” Conley said.
Dexamethasone Vs. Prednisone: Differences, Similarities, And Which Is Better For You
Dexamethasone has been shown to be beneficial in people with severe Covid-19 because it can stop the immune system from going into overdrive. When that happens, the immune system does more harm than good, attacking the body with a so-called cytokine storm.
“The fact that he got a steroid set up a red flag that something was going on here,” NBC News senior medical correspondent Dr. John Torres told Kate Snow on Sunday. “I think they paint a little rosy picture for everybody.”
The treatment was first shown to be helpful in clinical trials in the U.K. in June. Preliminary results of the trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that the steroid reduced the risk of death in severe Covid-19 patients who required supplemental oxygen. But in mild cases, the treatment is harmful.
“However, there was no evidence that dexamethasone provided any benefit in patients not receiving respiratory support at randomization, and the results were consistent with possible harm in this subgroup,” the researchers wrote.
Corticosteroids For Inflammation: Types And Uses
National Institutes of Health guidelines for the drug reflect those findings, suggesting that dexamethasone should only be given to patients who are on ventilators or require supplemental oxygen. They don’t recommend using it for people with less severe illnesses because of the potential for harm.
“We don’t recommend giving it to patients who don’t have supplemental oxygen or ventilation, because, in that case, it suppresses the immune system and it doesn’t fight Covid in those early stages,” Torres said.
Dr. Michael Sagg, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said the fact that doctors gave him the drug made him suspicious that the president suddenly switched from Thursday night to Friday morning.
“The disease course of Covid-19 is very unpredictable and waxes and wanes over the course of the illness,” Saag said. “I expect that the president and every other symptomatic person with Covid will have moments where he feels worse. Maybe at some point in those moments they decide to treat him more aggressively.”

Conley said Sunday that Trump had normal oxygen levels and no fever. He continues to receive Remdesivir, an antiviral treatment, and he
